Study.com Lessons

October 2021-present

(link)

  • Type of writing: Lessons/study guides

  • Published: Yes

  • Notes: Completed as contract work. My writing for the site is centered on improving search engine optimization and revamping existing content while also preserving its fundamental characteristics. While my work replaced existing lessons, I rewrote lessons without using any part of the previously available content.

Carnegie Mellon Writing Portfolio

December 2014

  • Type of writing: Research accommodation, technical instructions, feature story

  • Published: No (with one exception)

  • Notes: Completed as part of my master's degree. The industry profile piece was previously published in STEM Jobs magazine and also appears further down the page.  I used Adobe Illustrator and GIMP to create the illustrations myself, and laid out the booklet in Adobe InDesign.

  • Type of writing: Feature story

  • Published: Yes, STEM Jobs magazine

  • Notes: A freelance story on the safety science department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, my undergraduate alma mater.  A result of two interviews and some research.  I can only take credit for the story itself, not the sidebar pieces or the graphic design.

Indiana Council: Chill Out on Hot Dog John

October 22, 2012

(website link) (stable link)

  • Type of writing: Opinion piece

  • Published: Yes, The HawkEye

  • Notes: An opinion piece on a local vendor's struggles with the town council.  It was written from an in-class interview during a course on opinion writing.  I focused on explaining the issue and backing up my feeling on the matter with facts.

Pharmacists in Politics

September 2012

(link)

  • Type of writing: Feature story

  • Published: Yes, Pharmacy Today magazine

  • Notes: This story started with curiosity--how many state politicians had pharmacy degrees?  What followed was a lot of research, and then a lot of scheduling phone interviews across time zones, since my schedule and resources did not allow me to travel to meet anyone.  The final article reflects the level of work that I put into it, I think.

July 19, 2012

(website link) (stable link)

  • Type of writing: News

  • Published: Yes, pharmacist.com

  • Tools used:  Microsoft Word

  • Notes: A news brief well summarized by its title.  This piece was based on interviews with APhA interns done during an intern event following the advocacy described in the article.
