About The
Penn

The Penn is the Indiana University of Pennsylvania college newspaper.  I worked there for about three years (2011-2014) and did a lot of reporting and writing in that time. I'd like to highlight some of the best examples of my work from that time on this page. In the interest of full disclosure, I am only responsible for my own writing--I did not write my own headlines, take photographs, or assume an editorial role at the Penn.

Stories
Six O’Clock Series: Trayvon Martin’s mother speaks about profling of black youth

February 11, 2014

(link)

  • Type of writing: Feature story

  • Notes: The story was a result of both attending an event (the titular "Six O' Clock Series") and interviewing Sybrina Martin afterward.

Honors College Appoints New Director

January 24, 2013

(link)

  • Type of writing: News

  • Notes: In the interest of full disclosure, I was assigned this story in part because I was a member of the Honors College; however, my only previous experience with Dr. Finegan himself was from interviewing him for another story.

Bronze Birds and Constitution Changes: SGA in Transition

October 18, 2013

(link)

  • Type of writing: News

  • Notes: I was told that covering student government would likely be somewhat boring.  Imagine my surprise when I show up to a meeting to find the discussion revolving around major rules changes and the purchase of a large metal-plated hawk statue.  The trouble with this story was condensing everything.

Robert's Rules of Order

October 19-December 4, 2012

In 2012 I was given a chance to write a column on Robert's Rules of Order, for the purpose of educating student organization leaders.  It was cancelled after only a few columns, and it is neither the most recent or best example of my writing.  However, I think you can see a definite progression as I get used to the extremely short format and start trying to mix a bit of a casual style with the information I'm trying to convey.

Here are the columns, in order:

  • Robert's Rules Establish Meeting Framework (link)

  • Robert's Rules of Order: Calls to Order, Role Call, Quorum (link)

  • Robert's Rules of Order : An inside look at reports, officers and committees (link)

  • Robert's Rules of Order: Who is this Robert fellow? (link)

  • Robert's Rules of Order: Debate (link)
